After years of closure, Port Melbourne’s most treasured landmark is open once again.
From this weekend, Station Pier welcomes the public on weekends and public holidays during daylight hours — except on cruise operation days.
This long-anticipated reopening marks the first public access since 2020, following a major maintenance and preservation program led by Ports Victoria and the Victorian Government. The works ensure Station Pier’s ongoing role as Australia’s premier cruise and shipping terminal while allowing locals to reconnect with this extraordinary part of Melbourne’s maritime history.

A Timeless Connection
Built in 1854, Station Pier has stood as the city’s front door to the world. It welcomed new arrivals seeking opportunity, returning servicemen, ocean liners of the golden age, and today, international cruise ships carrying travellers to our shores.
To walk its weathered boards is to trace more than 170 years of stories — of farewells and homecomings, of salt air and anticipation. Now, with the pier once again open to the public, locals and visitors can experience that same sense of wonder that generations before have felt standing at the edge of Port Phillip Bay.

A New Experience for Visitors
The public reopening offers a unique opportunity to experience Port Melbourne’s waterfront in a way not seen for years. Stroll the timber boards, breathe in the sea air, and watch ships glide across the bay — an experience that captures both nostalgia and the beauty of modern coastal life.
Families can enjoy fish and chips by the water, bring a picnic, or simply take in the panoramic view stretching toward the city skyline. It’s a peaceful, authentic Melbourne experience — one that connects locals and travellers to the stories of the bay.

Preserving the Past, Inspiring the Future
Recent works have restored key heritage features of Station Pier — including the Gatehouse, pylons, electrical systems, corrosion protection, and wharf deck — securing its future as both a functioning port and a beloved community landmark.
Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne said the reopening would be welcome news for locals and recreational fishers eager to return. With more than 50,000 cruise passengers and crew expected annually, Station Pier remains a vital link between Victoria and the world — and now, once again, a place for everyone to enjoy.
As Port Melbourne continues to evolve, the reopening of Station Pier marks the beginning of a renewed connection between the city and the sea — a moment to reflect, to wander, and to rediscover the beauty of our waterfront.
